Acting Auditions
Acting auditions are a necessary and inherent element in the production of plays in live theatre and in casting productions for movies, video and live television shows. For relatively new performers, acting auditions can be stressful, even terrifying. Typically there are several actors competing for the same role in a production during acting auditions. For a young actor with little experience, the acting audition is a huge challenge More experienced actors can take acting auditions in stride, but nevertheless can be stressed when the desire for a particular role is strong. Acting auditions are held usually in the theater where a production will be presented,in which case actors will be required to read passages in the script while on stage. Even in small community theaters, the acting audition will be the same...with perhaps two or three actors reading or acting out a scene together. Often scripts will not be available before acting auditions are held, so actors will have a very short time...sometimes no time at all..to prepare audition for a role in acting auditions. This requires the ability to sight read well, and to simultaneously project the character fwhose speeches the actor is reading during the acting audition. Obviously more experienced actors have the edge in acting auditions. The director will seldom make decisions about casting major characters without several readings during acting auditions. The exception to this is where certain directors will have decided ahead of time that leading roles will go to particular actors, with the purpose of the acting audition being to cast supporting roles. Even then, there is often fierce competition during acting auditions to secure good character parts or major supporting roles. If a production is particularly importans, such as a major motion picture or an anticipated theatrical production on Broadway, several acting auditions may be held. Those acting in leading roles in any production must demonstrate strong acting ability...and the projection of personality can also be important. Acting in movies requires a very different technique from that required of those acting in live theatre, and auditions will take these different skills into consideration. Sometimes a live theater star will not audition well for movies, or may have to change their acting techniques to adapt to the different medium.
