Acting Awards
The advent of motion pictures and ultimately television spawned the star system among actors, and ultimately several institutions for awarding those with superior acting ability or star-quality personalities. Acting awards are coveted not only for recognition of acting ability, but because such recognition often results in more important acting roles and more money. Acting awards are given for film and television performances, both in the US and abroad. Perhaps the most widely recognized award system is that of the Academy Awards, which annually bestows acting awards as well as awards to producers, directors, writers, musicians and others in the film industry. Academy awards recognize acting ability in those performing oth leading roles and support roles. Awards most often go to those acting in serious drama, sometimes to character actors or to so-called "personality" actors. The same applies to the awards for those acting in support roles. In Great Britain similar awards are given for acting performances by the British Film Academy, and are just as coveted as those acting awards given in the US. The Canne Film Festival, an important annual event, not only honors those acting, but is famous for recognition of best films on an international basis. The festival is an exciting event and is attended by celebrities from many countries. Those acting primarily for the medium of television are recognized by the annual Emmy Awards which also award those acting in principle roles as well as support capacities. In addition to acting awards, the Emmy Awards also recognize producers and directors, writers, and musicians just as the Academy Awards system does. At a non-professional level, there are awards available to student actors and performers, usually in the form of scholarships to acting schools. One such organization offering acting awards to students is the Irene Ryan Acting Awards organization. There is glamour attached to the acting profession, and that glamour became promoted and intensified with the advent of movies and television, as those acting in the new media were recognized by millions and became objects of near-adoration in some cases. Inevitably the star system developed, and the systems for rewarding those with a combination of acting ability and charisma. Awards for acting are coveted and valuable, as they result in the recipients receiving more and better roles.
