Acting for Television

Acting for television is primarily confined to occasional special shows,so-called soap operas or daytime shows, and series which run on the networks in the evening. Of course many actors are seen on television with reruns of movies, where the original acting was done for motion pictures There are also many regular performers, such as talk-show hosts or game show hosts, but their work can't be classified as acting.

Acting for television can not only be very remunerative, but can provide work and income for long periods of time when the acting is part of a successful series. Various series provide a wide range of acting possibilities, as there are usually romantic leads, a villain or two, male or female, character roles and a variety of support roles which require only basic acting ability. Long-running shows involve both comedic themes and serious story lines, thus offering a range of acting requirements.

Acting for television is different in many aspects from acting in live theatre. While acting before an audience in a theatre requires vocal projection and some exaggeration of physical techniques, acting before the camera demands restraint. Facial expressions must be more subtle, underplaying in many cases with more subtle acting techniques. Exagerated expressions of tragic feelings can become comic. Physical actions, too, must often be restrained as the acting is being done in a confined area.

Acting in long-running television shows requires the creation of a character which can be maintained over many performances. Often characters do not have a great deal of depth, but nevertheless acting techniques must maintain enough consistency to convince an often dedicated audience. Soap opera heroes and heroines are usually either 100% sympathetic or 100% unlikable, and the acting must sustain the character's personality. The dialogue in soap operas can be superficial, but good acting must make it seem real and sincere.

In long-running evening dramatic series the characters may have more depth than those of daytime soaps, and the acting must reflect this. "Mash" and "Star Trek" are examples of long-running series where the characters and the acting were strongly imprinted on the public consciousness, and actors achieved fame through acting out the episodes effectively..The talents of those acting in long-running series should be recognized and is often rewarded by awards and permanent stardom.
