Acting in Action Movies
As we use the term action movies here, we are defining action movies as those which rely primarily on action...often intense, violent action, rather than subtle plot or character acting. Many movie stars particularly have risen to fame by acting in action films. Among the first action films that required minimal acting on the part of the actors were westerns Often acting in an early western film did not require much more than the ability to ride a horse and maintain a stern, strong-man expression and posture. Acting in such westerns involved a hero and at least one villain, and a heroine whose acting was less important than her beauty. The western genre has evolved over time, and today the acting of heroes and heroines is often accomplished and noteworthy and the plots more complex. Today there are many varieties of action films, some requiring a degree of acting skill, and others consisting primarily of violent or bizarre visual effects. An ever-popular series of action films, the James Bond movies, has showcased the acting of several male performers, among them Sean Connery, whose strong masculine charm and understated acting have created a great following. In the science fiction category, Star Trek is probably unsurpassed, and the long-term series of space adventures presented convincing acting performances on the part of its stars, each of whom succeeded in creating through their acting, strong, memorable characters. By contrast, many of the science fiction films have little plot and demand minimal acting skills of the characters who are constantly in imminent danger of annihilation by a variety of evil people and fantasy creatures. There are other types of films where suspense and action are combined, as in spy films, for example, and actors must exhibit a higher degree of acting ability as they interact and react to complex situations. In many films which are not typically action films, there may be a number of scenes in which the acting must accommodate moments of violence or fast action. Often the actors with leading roles in such films must learn specific physical skills to incorporate in their acting during the more violent scenes. Acting techniques may include learning how to feign violent fighting, or falling or drowning or any number of other situations which may be part of action scenes.
