Acting in Community Theatre

Acting in community theatre can be a source of great pleasure to aspiring actors who have a love of acting but have not chosen to devote a lifetime seeking a career acting in professional theatre. Community theatre, which exists in every major city and in many medium to small-size towns, offers a venue for those interested in acting and also to those who enjoy the support roles in theatre, such as stage managing, costuming and technical work. All of these areas are vital to support those acting in the theatre.

Acting in community theatre generally takes place in a more intimate environment than in most professional - or legitimate - theatres, also some community theatres are quite large and some Broadway theatres quite small. There is added intimacy in community theatre acting, however, as usually many in the audience know the actors personally.

Acting in any community production is prefaced by the same type of auditions as those associated with professional theatre. The same acting qualities and techniques are sought by the community theatre director as looked for by professional directors, though of course the former cannot expect a high level of professionalism in those acting in community theatre. It is surprising at times, however, to find a high degree of acting skill among community theaatre participants. Many times those acting in community productions have had considerable training in acting and though not professionals, have skills and talents associated with good performers.

Acting in community theatre demands much of those participating: memorization, often of many pages of dialogue, vocal techniques capable of projecting lines to the entire audience, acting ability to express emotion both through body language and vocaL interpretation, and the ability to "connect" with other actors and with the audience.

Good acting is good acting whether it takes place in a small community theatre or on a Broadway stage. And fine acting can be found in many community theatres..
