Acting in Professional Theater
Acting in professional...or legitimate...theater is the hoped-for goal of thousands of young and old actors, and is a difficult acting goal to achieve. Professional theater is a demanding and uncompromising venue...and to achieve the goal of acting in professional theatre you sinply have to be very good at your profession. It is a rare individual who meets success acting in professional theatre without long and rigorous training. Often a first audition is preceded by several years of college training or acting studies in a major school strictly for actors and support persons in the theater. And the auditioning process which precedes an opportunity for acting in live theater is also a challenging, even frightening experience. One can have well developed acting skills, and still miss out because of nervousness or stumbling during an audition. Once an actor has secured a part and will begin an acting career in professional theatre, the rehearsal process is demanding, often exhausting. Memorizing the lines for a major acting role is in itself arduous. Some have a natural bent for this process, and can quickly learn lines and move into the process of acting the part. Here the real skills come out...for acting in professional theatre requires not only facility and vocal skills, but the ability to "get into" a character, acting with truth and conviction to make the character truly come alive. In professional theater there are no retakes if the acting doesn't come up to par. Much of the excitement of acting in live theater is the interaction between audience and actor. "Connecting" with a live audience feeds the acting force and rewards the actor as no other experience can.. The energy projected by the actor when acting on stage is picked up by the audience and returned, to energize the.performer to achieve new acting heights. Acting in professional theatre is not nearly as rewarding monetarily as acting in movies and television. Often a show may be rehearsed for weeks and then have only a short run. Acting in musicals is sometimes more secure, as popular musicals may run for years, assuring a steady acting position and income. Acting in serious drama in the theatre, however, has a special prestige attached to it, and even highly successful stars in movies like to return to the legitimate stage periodically to enjoy the special experience of acting before a live audience and prove their acting skills in the environment of professional theater.
