Comedians Acting In The Performing Arts
The role of comedians acting in the performing arts has evolved since ancient times. Through recorded history, acting comedians have been present in the performing arts, performing in every venue from royal courts to taverns to village and city streets, and early theatres. Today acting comedians are ever-present in the performing arts, on stage and screen, in legitimate theatre, on videos and television shows, in intimate surroundings as standup comics and on movie screens worldwide...every venue for acting in the performing arts have comedians. Perhaps the earliest kind of comedian actor was the court clown, or jester, retained to amuse royalty. Acting today still includes clowns, particularly in circuses and other traveling shows, where they continue to amuse both children and adults. In the mid-twentieth centure, many comedians emerged in the field of acting by way of radio. Several of these comedians went on to enter other fields of the performing arts, including motion pictures and theatre. Such personalities as Jack Benny, Bob Hope and Milton Berle enjoyed long fame as comedians, acting in the performing arts. More recently an area in acting, known as stand-up comedy, usually performed in intimate environments, has led both male and female comedians to fame and fortune in other areas of the performing arts. While some comedians acting in the performing arts create much of their own material, many rely on gifted writers to supply their laugh-generating lines. More than a comedian, brilliant acting star, Charlie Chaplin is virtually immortal as one of the great comedians in the acting performing arts. His performances ranged from slap-stick to satire during the long period when movies were his venue in the performing arts. More recently such popular television series as "Monty Python" and "Saturday Night Live" have created numerous star comedians acting in the performing arts. Comedy and acting comedians have ever been important in the performing arts. People love to laugh, and they love the people who make them laugh. Comedy acting in the performing arts is here to stay.
