Comedic Acting
The category of comedic acting needs to be separated from that of comedic performing. The former consists of acting in theatre, movies or television in a fictional situation, rather than performing as a comedian in, say, stand-up comedy settings. Comedic acting has been a specialty of numerous actors, some acting as a character in a play or movie, or some simply appearing in such a situation as a personality. Jack Benny, for example, appeared both as a comedic performer (beginnign with a radio show) and acting in movies later, acting a role in a story. Some comedic acting, such as that of the famous Marx Brothers was basically slap-stick, depending more on situations and physical comedy rather than straight acting. Other comedic actors who often played on situations for their comedic acting included Milton Berle and Sid Caesar, king of comedy in early television. Other masters at comedic acting include the fabulous Lucille Ball, whose long-running TV series kept millions of Americans laughing. Her great timing, facial expression and ability to be physically funny made her comedic acting memorable. Other successful comedic performers use a restrained approach to acting, often delivering very amusing lines in a perfectly straight manner, with very subtle facial expression making their point. Such a comedic performer is Billy Crystal whose subtle acting has made him famous. Jack Lemmon, a brilliant actor, could deliver superb acting performances both as a serious actor and in comedic roles where his acting delivered amusing lines in a straight manner...or vice versa. Another form of comedic acting takes place in an environment which is really a cross between acting in a play or movie, and performing as a stand-up comic. This is a category such as the television shows "Saturday Night Live" and "Monty Python". Those acting in these shows are masters at comedic performance, and often take on a specific personality when acting in a series of skits. Sometimes those acting in such shows can also switch from one distinct character to another with equal comedic results. The comedy is these shows is seldom subtle, and often borders on slapstick, requiring outrageous acting performances from the stars. Numerous performers on these telvision series have gone on to do comedic acting in films.
