Star System for ActingThere has always been a kind of star system related to acting in both theatre and later motion pictures and television. In earlier times, stars became famous because of both their public appeal and acting capability, and the work of good promotion experts. People made their favorite acting stars known by attendance at acting performances. In the past century the star system for acting was not as sophisticated as it is today, and the advent of motion pictures was one contributing factor to the development of the star system to recognize those acting in this medium. Press agents and promoters became a major factor, and those acting on stage and screen coveted being recognized as "stars". The star system became important to acting success...performers wanted and needed recognition to advance their acting careers...and increase their income. Basically, becoming a star involved not only recognition for acting, but public recognition and adulation for the actor as a personality. A major factor in the development of the star system related to acting was the advent of the organizations which award stars of stage and cinema at national, annual award ceremonies. The Academy of Motion Pictures awards coveted Oscars to actors, producers, writers, musicians...all those associated with movie making. The actors, men and women, recognized for their acting in leading and supporting roles are assured much publicity and inevitable advancement of their acting careers. Stars are created by a combination of notable acting ability, good publicity and promotion, and the awards they receive. Constant coverage in the press, part of the star system in acting, is both a blessing and a nuisance, as star performers have little privacy. Recognition as acting stars is good...but loss of personal privacy is a detriment. Recognition of acting ability and personal appeal among stars comes in a number of ways. The Emmy awards recognize the stars of television for their acting skills. There are also award system to recognize stars of the legitimate theatre for acting skills.Stars of live theatre, while they often become famous, are often not rewarded monetarily as highly as those performing in motion pictures. Nevertheless, fame and recognition as a star is related to a system of promotion and awards for acting, and also constant promotion of the star at a personal level. The star system related to acting is here to stay.
