Advertising Sales
Like all the other aspects of advertising, advertising sales has many levels and variations. Advertising sales is an integral part of the entire advertising world as advertising sales is the process by which consumer and business advertising is purchased and placed with various media. Both clients and advertising agencies are approached by those responsible for advertising sales. Every medium, every magazine, radio station and TV station, is vying for the advertising dollars spent in billions every year. Advertising sales is very big business. The persons responsible for advertising sales for a major magazine, either consumer or business oriented, must not only be an excellent salesperson, but must study and absorb the marketing information necesssary to advertising sales. A person handling advertising sales cannot simply approach a potential client by saying a magazine is a great magazine. The customer wants the advertising sales person to tell him why he should spend his dollars in a specific medium...will the advertising reach the right audience? Will advertising dollars bring a substantial return on investment? The client will want proof in terms of research data from the advertising sales person that proves the magazine is a good place for the client's advertising. Anyone who is handling advertising sales for a TV station or network must have at his or her command figures relating to share of audience and response to advertising in a particular time slot or specific show. The advertising sales person must have full information as to rates and scheduling and convince the potential advertiser that a buy is going to be profitable to the client. Advertising sales is high pressured and demanding..and the sales person must prove himself in terms of space or time sold. Advertising sales related to print advertising, particularly major magazines, also requires research to prove effectiveness. Of course advertising sales persons may do a good job in terms of recommending a good purchase for a client...but the ads placed must also be effective to bring good response. Advertising sales persons often recommend that ads be of a certain size and include full color art, and be positioned properly in the publication in order to get the best response from readers and potential customers of the company advertising. Advertising sales persons of course have an operating budget and must reconcile their expenditures, including travel, entertainment such as taking clients to lunch or dinner, with results in terms of advertising sales totals. So of course advertising sales agents budget expenditures according to the potential revenue from a given client. So the advertising sales manager or salesperson must have good management skills as well as salesmanship attributes, and must be very knowledgeable about markets and the products for a given market. Advertising sales for major media is both challenging and rewarding if the sales person is knowledgeable and skilled.
