TV Advertising
The advent of television and subsequently TV advertising has revolutionized marketing and advertising worldwide. Radio advertising made it possible to reach millions of people simultaneously...but TV advertising has not only expanded the reach, but TV advertising has added visuals and drama to advertising that no other medium can offer. TV advertising is responsible for billions of dollars spent by corporations to advertise their products, and TV advertising has prompted the spending of additional billions on the part of consumers who buy the advertised products. TV advertising is most desirable and most expensive on TV shows that have the biggest audiences...this is obvious. Only large corporations can afford TV advertising on these major shows. Shows with a smaller share of viewers and locally produced shows offer less expensive TV advertising...often such TV advertising is directed to local audiences. Advertising agencies who produce TV advertising for major clients are highly paid for their work, but the TV advertising they create must produce results in terms of revenue to the client. There are some exceptions to this...for example the kind of TV advertising or promotion that is calculated to build corporate "image" and goodwill. This form of TV advertising may be used by oil companies, for instance, to relay a message that they are concerned with the environment. While this sort of TV advertising does not produce results in terms of immediate sales, it may improve the public's image of that company, particularly since environment has become a major issue. Because TV advertising is so omnipresent, the creators of such advertising are hard pressed to continually come up with new ideas and creative approaches to keep clients' TV advertising original and effective. An extreme example of this challenge lies in automotive TV advertising, where it seems every possible approach to TV car advertising has been tried.Yet we continue to see new ways of creating, dismembering, dissecting, immolating and showing automobiles in incredible performance sequences in TV commercials...as well as different ways of expressing individuals' delight in their new cars.. There are some types of TV advertising which are calculated to result in immediate sales. These are forms of direct TV advertising, such as that done by companies selling jewelry and gems. In this case the items are displayed and the TV advertising consists of descriptions and announcements of quantities and urging the audience to phone in orders. A similar approach to TV advertising is used to sell various household and personal items, where one must phone in orders because the item is not available in stores. The constant interruption of television shows, movies and news broadcasts by TV advertising is often a major irritation to viewers...but continue it must, because revenue supports the shows themselves, the people who perform and direct and serve on production crews...the very medium itself. TV advertising is here to stay...because it pays and pays and pays.
