Avoiding a Dull Diet

Many of us, through habit or inertia or the demands of daily living, fall into a pattern of eating a simple, reiterative and uninteresting diet. A diet may be reasonably adequate in terms of nutrition, but it's dull. And because eat we must, it's worthwhile to take a little time to make a diet interesting and even exciting.

The first requirement in developing a regular diet should, of course, be to pay attention to healthy nutrition. There are many sources to help to develop a good diet, and make certain that the basic essential ingredients of a balanced diet are part of our food shopping routine. Once this is accomplished, the next step is to ensure that the diet is interesting and varied.

There are many ways to put a little excitement into daily meals with simple changes in diet. One way to add some variety to a diet is to incorporate vegetables which one does not normally have on the shopping list. If, for instance you habitually purchase white potatoes, carrots, peas and beans for the week's meals, try something different to include in the diet. Pumpkin or yellow squash is delicious sauteed with a little onion, or with the addition of fried apples and a handful of pecans. Asparagus is delicious lightly steamed and glamorized with a few mushrooms or sliced almonds and butter.

Instead of frozen precooked fish, try frozen salmon steaks marinated in Teriyaki sauce and fried in butter to brighten up a dull diet. This has the virtue of not only being a delicious element in your diet, but of being especially nutritious as well. If white potatoes are the order of the day, yams are a delicious change. Like chicken breast as a regular in your diet? Chicken Szechuan is an easy, tasty diet treat. Sautee the chicken, add a few slivers of onion and zucchini or green beans, a spoonful or Szechuan sauce and a handful of cashews, serve with rice and you have an exciting addition to a routine diet.

From available regional and foreign cookbooks, one can choose a variety of easy-to-make meals to liven up a dull diet. Eating should be fun and pleasurable as well as nutritious. And if there are children in one's family, it is well to broaden their tastes with a varied diet, so that as adults they will welcome change and variety in the diets.

Do yourself and your family a favor, and look for simple, interesting ways to brighten up a dull diet.
