Diet for Blood Types
Among many nutritional concepts, some groups advocate a diet developed for each of the specific blood types. This diet system is based upon the theory that different blood types require slightly different nutritional values in their diets. The rationale for this theory is that different blood types are the result of slightly different evolutionary circumstances. As an example, it is propounded by the supporters of this special approach to nutrition, that persons with blood type 0 have evolved from long-ago ancesters who thrived primarily on grains and vegetarian edibles. Thus, the theory goes, type 0 blood types require little, if any, meat in their diet to maintain health. Other nutritionists might argue that the total elimination from meat in the diet is inadvisable particularly during growing years, when protein in the diet is vital to good body growth. The same diet theory suggests that other blood types, such as AB, exist among those whose ancesters thrived on meat supplemented with a little grain and other vegetation. Thus, theoretically, persons with this blood type require substantial amounts of meat in the diet to maintain good health. There are a multitude of examples in today's society which might refute the validity of this diet theory. Many a person with type 0 blood has thrived on a regular meat diet (which presumably contained good nutrients in the form of fruits and vegetables), until the age of 90 plus. And there are equal numbers of other blood types who have chosen a purely vegetarian diet and thrived equally well. Books have been published putting forth very rational and well-supported arguments for this approach to diet, but it may not be accepted by large numbers of people who like their steak and pork shops. The amount of meat to be included in a diet may be arguable to some extent. The basics of good nutrition, however, are fairly well established. In general, good nutrition leans toward generous consumption of a wide variety of vegetables and fruit, some source of protein, whole grains and foods which contain antioxidants, such as dark green leafy vegetables. Knowledge of the nutritional values of foods is important in maintaining a healthy diet, and should be used in planning meals for persons of all ages. We have but one body in which to live out our lives. Maintaining a healthy diet is the only way we have to preserve and support that body. A good diet also contributes to a positive, healthy mental state as well.
