Diet to Avoid Obesity

As obesity is a growing, major problem among both childen and adults, it is wise to develop a diet which will prevent the problem before it becomes overwhelming. If there is any medical foundation for the problem, a doctor should be consulted before developing a diet, and his prescription should be followed. If you are developing a diet on your own simply to avoid or correct obesity, there are a number of important guidelines.

The first guideline to avoiding obesity is very simple. Avoid fast foods. They are known to be high in fats, starches and sugars guaranteed to help you gain weight. It's important to avoid prepared foods in your diet for the same reasons. So - do your own cooking and food preparation. It is the only way you can completely control your diet. This does not mean you can never go out for a meal. but make your choices of dining out where a variety of healthy foods are available.

A diet which can help to avoid excessive weight gain will include lean meats, fish, a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and grains. The diet will avoid fats, excessive red meats, white flour products and sugar. Snacking is a path to obesity if you favor chips, candy, soft drinks and ice cream. If a snack is a bit of cheese and an apple, that's a safe addition to the diet. If you like rice, use brown rice. It is nutritious, not just a starchy filler.

Include grains in the daily diet in the form of whole grain breads and oatmeal...not white bread, muffins and cake.

A good breakfast is important in the diet to avoid abesity, with perhaps whole grain bread or oatmeal, an egg and fruit. Eliminating breakfast in the diet results in a dip in blood sugar which leads to a sudden craving, often for something sweet to quickly bring the blood sugar back normal. This pattern in a diet leads to a roller coaster effect in blood sugar which is bad for the entire system and results in poor eating habits including unhealthy snacking.

Developing and maintaining a diet to avoid obesity requires some thought and discipline but pays off in good health and better appearance. Diet choices maintained for a time become diet habits. Children who are raised on a healthy diet which is designed to avoid obesity will be more apt to maintain a healthy diet in later years, so a diet to control obesity will have long term good effect.
