Going on a Diet

How many times have you said...or heard a friend say..."I'm going on a diet"? Usually this means the person is trying to lose weight and needs "to diet". It may also mean that the person, including yourself, may have heard of a diet that is reportedly exceptionally healthy, such as a macrobiotic diet. In any event, "going on a diet" usually involves a major change in one's eating habits and meal preparation, and can be challenging.

Going on a diet involves several types of preparation. The first is to change one's mind set about diet. If you are accustomed to a basic "meat and potatoes" diet, a new diet may involve a change in attitude about food, a modification of tastes and a change in shopping habits. The first approach is to change the mind set...moving away from the habits and choices of one's previous diet. It is important to have a positive attitude about diet change, not any thought of deprivation.

If the diet change is fairly major, it's a good idea to make up a group of menus and meals to guide shopping and cooking in order to maintain the new diet. It is also a good idea to research and develop new recipes and ways of preparing any new or important food elements in the diet. If you're emphasizing vegetables and minimizing meats in the new diet, learn tasty ways to prepare the vegetables and experiment with vegetables you've seldom or never eaten. If you're attempting to substitute fish for meat several times a week, learn new ways of preparing and seasoning fish, and try varieties you've not eaten before. So many types of foods are available in the frozen food section of a supermarket that you can expand your diet tremendously if you wish.

Barring a serious medical condition, a change of diet can be approached gradually rather than precipitously to make it easier to adapt to new foods. Make one change at a time. Add one or two new dishes a week. Eliminate "bad" foods one at a time. Experiment with totally new foods or recipes once a week. Take it easy. Relax. Diet change can be exciting and beneficial when properly approached.
