Macrobiotic Diet

The term macrobiotic diet refers to a diet which was developed in Japan, and which differs a great deal from a typical western diet. The differences in the macrobiotic diet are in part due to the fact that any diet from a specific geographic area is in part developed around the available foods. The macrobiotic diet also differs from what we consider to be an average diet in western countries as it more strictly adheres to a delicate balance of food in terms of total health.

The macrobiotic diet, in terms of general principles, largely avoids red meats and relies on fish as an animal protein source. This diet avoids animal fats, such as butter and fats on red meats. The macrobiotic diet also excludes sugar and sugar products, white flour and white rice. Brown rice, however, is an important element in the macrobiotic diet. The macrobiotic diet also incorporates regular use of seaweeds, of which there are several varieties. This, of course, contains the important food elements found in the dark green leafy vegetables which are common to western diet, such as spinach and chard.

The macrobiotic diet recommends a balanced use of vegetables as an important part of a daily diet. Because much of the eastern culture puts emphasis on the energy inherent in all things, the macrobiotic diet recommends handling vegetables in specific ways in terms of washing, cutting and cooking. For example, when preparing vegetables for this type of diet, it is suggested that the vegetable be cut diagonally, so that each piece has an element of both yin and yang, the positive and negative forces. Sea salt is recommended in seasoning, and a pickle at the end of a meal is recommmended as good for digestion.

When the macrobiotic diet is used as a healing diet, it is applied very specifically to the person using it. Specialists in prescribing the healing diet will develop a diet which is clearly defined both as to the content and the quantities of foods and beverages included in the diet. It is claimed that this diet can heal almost any type of illness or disease. It is also considered important to approach the process of eating in a serene frame of mind, and to eat slowly and carefully. In fact, the original Japanese nutritionist/philosopher who developed the macrobiotic diet for healing is said to have proclaimed "Give me a man who will chew his food one hundred times and I will cure him of any disease."

If you are interested in exploring different diets, and if you are particularly interested in healing diets, it would be well for you to explore the details of a macrobiotic diet.
