Spicing up Your Diet

Many of us in our regular day to day cooking neglect to use spices and seasonings in ways to make our diets more interesting. The cooking basics often include just salt and papper, a little mustard and catsup, maybe some barbecue sauce. Even by adding just a little minced garlic or garlic power, perhaps onion powder or lemon pepper seasoning, you can add considerable spice to your diet.

There are many other ways, however, that you can spice up your diet with a pinch of this and a dash of that. For instance, by keeping some typical Caribbean spices in your cupboard you can add a lot of flavor to your diet. For example, to a mixture of sauteed squash (or pumpkin) and apple, add a little ginger or cinnamon, and toss in a handful of pecan meats. A nice vegetable treat in your diet. Speaking of pumpkin (or squash) cut slices and dip in a batter seasoned with cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, and fry until crisply done for a special and unusual diet treat.

Or make avocado salad with chopped avacodo, tomato and a bud of minced garlic. This is tasty way to spice up the delicious avocado in your diet.

Ground beef, a staple in many people's diet, becomes a lot more interesting with a little spicing up. The addition of salsa, a dash of hot pepper sauce, garlic and steak sauce or Lea and Perrins sauce will do the trick. For a touch of really hot, try a spoonful of Szechuan sauce. Talk about spicing up your diet!

French toast for breakfast? Try spicing it up with cinnamon, nutmeg and a dash of ginger. Or for tasty scrambled eggs in your breakfast diet menu, grate some sharp cheddar and chop up a tomato, add to the eggs and milk with a good dash of black pepper along with the salt and you will be spicing up your diet.

Just about everyone has bread in their diet. Why not bake some really interesting onion/herb bread by spicing it up with a tablespoon of mixed dried herbs, a small chopped onion, some basil, parsley and rosemary to a standard bread recipe.

If you like a nice tossed salad with simple oil and vinegar dressing as a regular part of your diet, try Tarragon or Balsamic vinegar instead of plain. If you're doing a shrimp salad as a special diet treat, try spicing it up by mixing your own dressing with Miracle Whip, chili sauce and a good spoonful of horseradish.

You can make a creative salad dressing which goes beyond oil and vinegar by adding a dash of catsup, some dijon mustard, a little Lea and Perrins, salt and coarse black pepper. A few capers couldn't hurt when spicing up your diet.

If you like fried chicken, (for many this is a regular part of their diet) try spicing it up by marinating the chicken first in slices of onion and chopped garlic buds, cover with flour, and season while frying with a dry hot seasoning mix, or seasoned salt and poultry seasoning, all available on the spice rack. If you're careful, you can add the floured onions and garlic pieces to the pan for delicious bits.

Spicing up your diet will make mealtime more interesting and more tasty.
