Vegetarian Diet

Many people, for one reason or another, choose to maintain a vegetarian diet. Such a diet may vary in terms of strict adherence, and if carried to the maximum it may become a vegan diet which is highly selective in terms of admissible foods. Most people choose to follow a vegetarian diet because they are convinced it is the most healthy type of diet, eliminating meats, animal fats and often various forms of sugar. While it is true that excessive meat and animal fats can be harmful, it has not been completely proven that a vegetarian diet is the best approach to eating. Many people, however, including some nutritionists, feel a vegetarian diet is the way to go.

Basically, the vegetarian diet consists of any and all vegetables, fruits and grains. Certain people, either for reasons of allergy or simply choice, limit gain consumption to certain grains, and eliminate white flour and sugar from their diets.

Some vegetarians will include eggs in their diet. Some will include cheese in the diet. Some will prefer only steamed or raw vegetables; others will prepare vegetables in a variety of ways, including stir fry or the use of sauces. Some dedicated vegetarians eat only raw foods, prepared in a variety of unique ways to resemble other types of foods. This type of diet is probably the most restrictive, but its advocates claim it is the purest way to consume food.

Vegetarians must find ways to include sufficient protein in their diet, as the diet does not include meat. To maintain proper nutrition, vegetarians must be well informed as to the nutrients in various foods. Soy in many forms is often used in a vegetarian diet as a source of protein. Certain types of beans and brown rice can be an important element in a vegetarian diet as well. Any number of food companies are devoted to providing foods and prepared meals to conform to the vegetarian diet. Soy and other products are processed to resemble in appearance and taste various meats. It is interesting that people who eliminate meat from their diets nevertheless want foods that resemble meats. Nevertheless, once the decision has been made to maintain a vegetarian diet, there are many ways to make this healthful approach to eating both tasty and delicious as well as nutritious.
