Hip Hop Fashion
Hip hop fashion has a very specific look to it. And it is very current, but it really started in the 80's with the whole hip hop scene in some of the major cities on the East and West coast and in Chicago, in America. In its infancy, hip hop fashion was specific to the African American culture, but now it is widely enjoyed in worldwide mainstream culture. Hip hop fashion quickly attracted well known fashion brands and hip hop clothing and accessories became available in mainstream outlets. There were certain items of apparel that were typical, including sunglasses and particularly, chunky gold jewelry. A little later, dreadlocks, baggy pants, wearing clothes backwards and African colors became popular in hip hop fashion. Gradually, large sportswear lines were leaning towards the hip hop look and big name athletes were wearing hip hop fashions. Then the gangsta rappers began to influence hip hop fashion and soon the new rage was to wear Raiders jackets and caps and then more of the look of real gangsters and prison inmates. But this was later followed by an attachment to the look of gangsters from the earliest part of the twentieth century. And even women's high fashion was reflecting the growth in popularity of hip hop fashion. And some of the biggest names in Rap music appeared on the runway showing off hip hop fashion. And hip hop fashion isn't just about the clothes or jewelry, although jewelry has transitioned over the years from yellow gold to platinum (or silver) and studded with diamonds and has earned its own name...bling. Hip hop fashion is also about hair fashion. A return to more traditional African American styles of hair like corn rows and Afros was popular about ten years ago. Although hip hop fashion isn't really that old, there is already a demand for some vintage hip hop apparel. And some items go for a pretty high price. Hip hop fashion is alive and well and even though it is mainstream in terms of clothing and general fashion style for young people, it is closely associated with the music of so many hip hop artists and that music is not necessarily as mainstream as the hip hop fashion itself. In children, you do not see too much of the hip hop look across the board, but you do see it in some small sectors of society. And you can even find some hip hop fashion for your dog if you happen to hit the right store at the right time.
