Some cultures and religions dictate what the members look like in terms of women's fashion. Women's fashion is sometimes controlled by their men, by their county's laws or by the dictates of their religion. Women's own fashion in these situations, is out of their control. and this is true of women in all societies. Sometimes it is quite obvious when women's fashion is governed by others. Take religious nuns, for example. These women's fashion, although evolving through the years, was quite limited in its garb. The habit was dark, heavy, multi-layered and covered almost all of the nun's skin, except for the face and, when in use, the hands.

It is interesting that for centuries, the women's fashion for religious groups such as the Catholic nuns, was pretty well accepted and not labeled as oppressive, when it actually was. And in some cultures in the world where women are made to dress in a very similar fashion as the early nun's habit, draw such outrage from a great part of the modern world. Yes, over time, the nun's habit has transitioned into a more modern form of women's fashion, but it took a long, long time.

Women's fashion, in the area of hair has journeyed through many stages in history. It would seem, that a sense of modesty and propriety were often the governing influences over some of women's hair fashion. And also, the cutting of women's hair, until fairly recently, was not practiced. Women's hair and women's fashion were not truly addressed actively until women started cutting, coloring, curling and styling their hair in all kinds of radical ways. that is when women's fashion really allowed creativity and self expression in the area of hair.
