Fishing Reels

Fishing reels are devices that hold fishing line. They feed out fishing line in a controlled manner and they retract the fishing line in a controlled manner. Fishing reels are usually used in conjunction with fishing rods, but not always. There are different types of fishing reels that fisherman use, depending upon the conditions and the type of fish being sought. The original type of fishing reel is the bait and cast fishing reel. It is a fairly simple mechanical device for the feeding out and reeling in a fishing line and bait. It is suitable for all types of fishing depending upon its size. It can be used for deep sea fishing as well as fresh water fishing. It was originally made of brass, but now it is usually made of lighter metal alloys. It is quite durable. The next innovation in fishing reels was the spin casting reel. This reel is by necessity of its design, a lighter slightly less rugged fishing reel. It is good for big fish, but not for truly big fish as well as smaller fish. There are saltwater and freshwater versions of this fishing reel also. This fishing real comes in many sizes and weights depending upon the game being fished for. Its advantages over the bait and cast reel are its lighter weight and its better control. The disadvantages of this type of fishing reel over the bait and cast fishing reel is that it is unsuitable for use on the truly large fish.

Another type of very popular fishing reel with a very long history is the fly fishing fishing reel. This reel has historically been much more manually controlled than the other fishing reels giving the angler more pinpoint accuracy in casting once he became expert in this type of fishing reel use. This type of fishing reel has had some automated models designed and used, but the more manual type for this fishing reel is still the most popular. There are fly fishing fishing reels for saltwater and freshwater use. Saltwater varieties of this fishing reel are usually heavier and of necessity made to be more corrosion proof.

Fishing reels have had quite a long history with the first ones being known to have been in use as early as 1100 BC. Many civilizations have had fishing reels in use. The Greeks and Romans most notably. The fishing reel didn't come into wide use in Europe until the 1600's and wasn't in wide use in America until the 1800's. The mechanics of the fishing reel have been refined over the years, but have not changed markedly. But, with modern manufacturing, the component materials of fishing reels have changed, making them lighter and more durable and making their machining more accurate. Fishing reels are still an essential piece of equipment for the fisherman.
