Fly Fishing
Fly fishing is an ancient form of fishing. It has been used throughout history, mostly to catch trout and salmon. Today, fly fishing is used to also catch bass, pike and various pan fish. Fly fishing is also used nowadays in saltwater fishing to catch fish such as snook, tarpon and striped bass. When fly fishing, the fisherman uses an artificial fly to entice the fish to take the hook. The fly was originally made from natural materials like feathers and fur. But in fly fishing today, most flies are made of synthetic materials. Fly fishing flies come in many colors, sizes and shapes in order to attract the type of fish being sought. In fly fishing, the weight of the fly fishing line delivers the fly to the target area unlike other forms of fishing where the weight of the bait or lure when cast carries it to the target area. Fly fishing line is usually weighted by being covered in plastic. In fly fishing, the fly is delivered by a whipping motion of the fly fishing line imparted to it by the fly fishing rod. A rhythm is used to flick the line back and forth. Those skilled in fly fishing can cast the fly very far and very accurately. In fly fishing, there are dry flies, those that imitate insects landing on the surface of the water and there are wet flies, those that are intended to sink into the water, resembling food attractive to the fish, such as frogs, crabs and worms. In fly fishing, flies are said to be imitative, meaning they simulate natural food to which the fish is attracted or fly fishing flies are said to be attractive which means they do not resemble a natural food, but through their design, they trigger feeding activity. Ancient Romans are said to have been fly fishing from the second century. But modern fly fishing is said to have started on the rivers of Scotland and Northern England in the thirteen hundreds. Over the years, books on fly fishing began to appear and it steadily grew in popularity. Fly fishing rods must be long and flexible. Originally, fly fishing rods were made from various woods. Later, bamboo became very popular material for the manufacture of fly fishing rods. Fly fishing rods run anywhere from six to fifteen feet in length. And fly fishing rods today are generally made from fiberglass or graphite. Although, bamboo fly fishing rods are still preferred by some due to their historic nature. A big part of fly fishing is the choosing and or making of the fly fishing fly. Depending upon the species of fish being sought, different patterns of fly fishing flies are used. Many fly fishing enthusiasts enjoy making their own fly fishing flies. Tying your own fly fishing flies can be a painstaking and difficult pastime. Fly fishing flies are now widely available through stores and on the internet. So many of the fly fishing enthusiasts just purchase the flies they will need for their fly fishing.
