Spear Fishing

People go spear fishing for many reasons. Some people go spear fishing for sport and some people go spear fishing to put food on the table. While some go spear fishing to get fish to sell. Spear fishing has been a popular method of fishing throughout man's history. Primitive cultures used sharpened sticks to pull fish out of rivers and oceans. Modern spear fishing has come a long way. Today, most people spear fishing use a spear gun that propels a spear by means of an elastic band. In most areas spear guns that are otherwise powered are outlawed, as is spear fishing while using scuba gear. Most spear fishing is done while free diving. Most commonly, spear fishing is done from shore diving, where those spear fishing enter the water from the beach and work up and down the coast spear diving, using snorkel, mask, flippers and elastic powered spear gun.

Most people spear fishing can hold their breath for between one and two minutes and dive to more than fifty and sixty feet. Most people spear fishing work near shore around reefs where fish are usually plentiful. When spear fishing they usually tow a float of some sort that they tether to themselves by a cord. This float sometimes an old plastic bleach bottle is used to float their catch a safe distance from them just in case there are hungry sharks in the area. Getting in and out of the water when shore diving can be difficult if the surf is rough or the area is very rocky. But by spear fishing this way, you do not need a boat which is a big plus.

Boat spear fishing is done and can be good if you want to do your spear fishing in deeper waters. And hunt larger fish than those that are generally close to shore. Some people who do spear fishing use small motor boats or kayaks to get them out to their dive sites for spear fishing. The gear used for boat spear fishing is otherwise the same as the gear used for shore diving spear fishing. The sport of blue water spear fishing has grown in popularity in recent years. In this type of spear fishing, divers are taken by boat out into very deep waters where they fish for very large fish like Marlin and Tuna. This type of spear fishing can be a very exciting, but dangerous sport.

Spear fishing has also been done for centuries without diving. In this type of spear fishing, the fisherman wades into shallow water and catches fish with a hand spear. This type of spear fishing takes a lot of practice and calm water is a necessity.
