Holiday Foods

Holiday foods can include all the special holiday treats that are marketed especially for the holidays or they can be the foods that you choose to prepare only at the holidays and they become an expected traditional fare for you, your family and your friends. Many people save certain food recipes to prepare only at certain holidays. These holiday foods can be part of a meal, a snack or a special dessert. Holiday foods can be sweet and gooey or salty and crispy or a great big turkey pot pie for the day after Thanks giving. What you choose to make as holiday foods is up to you. There are all sorts of menus and recipes in cookbooks and on the internet that give you instructions and photos to guide you if you want to experiment with new holiday foods. Or you may choose to use old family favorites as your recipes for your holiday foods. These might be third or fourth generation recipes and have become traditional holiday foods for you.

The classic fruit cake is a good example of a holiday food that has a special recipe that has been handed down through the generations. I know my family has one that came for my great great grandmother, at least. And although the famous fruit cake holiday food is often the brunt of many jokes and stand up comic routines, a great fruit cake recipe produces a great fruit cake. And for a holiday food favorite, try serving one up in thin slices with some whipped cream on top. You might find the holiday food isn't as funny as you once thought.

Other holiday foods are like the very traditional roast turkey dinner with yams, stuffing and potatoes and gravy and an assortment of pies for dessert. (Especially, the traditional pumpkin pie as pumpkin is seasonal and abundant at that time of year.) Christmas dinner is another traditional holiday food meal. Although there are several food choices for this holiday. Some people like turkey again. Some people like a ham and sweet potato dinner. And some people like a standing beef rib roast with Yorkshire pudding. But whatever your choice is, the Christmas dinner, if you celebrate Christmas, is full of special holiday foods. The Jewish holidays are full of special Kosher, holiday foods as well. And there are as many different holiday foods as there are cultural holidays around the world.

Holidays can mean the same thing to people everywhere even if they are not the same holidays and holiday food can be as varied as you can imagine, but to each of us the significance of the holiday food is equally important. Try stepping outside your own cultural experience and your own favorite holiday foods and do a little research or make some new friends and participate in some different holidays and sample some different holiday foods. This might be a first step in bringing different cultures to common ground. Food is a very universal thing and holiday food might be just the right kind of food to share with others who are different from yourself.
