Holiday Decorations

Holiday decorations add a certain element of festivity to any space. Whether it is at work or at home or at school, holiday decorations lend an air of welcome and hospitality and usually lift everyone's spirits. Holiday decorations can be simple or elaborate, hand made or store bought, homey or high tech, but they are always festive. There are some holidays where the decorations are most of what the holiday is about. Take Halloween, for example. Yes there are costumes and holiday food, but they are actually incorporated into the Halloween decorations and are a big part of the fun and atmosphere involved in the holiday. Especially if there are Holiday parties planned. Holidays like Halloween can be centered around and decorated around a theme such as the traditional haunted house or literature or periods in history and the decorations will follow the theme and so will the costumes.

Holiday decorations are sometimes very traditional and leave little room for creativity. Religious holidays, for example, have very little in the way of options in terms of decorations. Take for instance, Chanukah. Menorahs are Menorahs. They may vary in style, but they are still Menorahs. The Star of DAvid is another example. It may vary in size, color and material, but the shape is always the same. So these are very important constant elements included in the holiday decorations for Chanukah. Holiday decorations for Christian holidays have some equivalent aspects to them. There are things like Christmas Ornaments that are hand Carved from Olive Wood in the Holy Land. They might represent images of the Manger Scene or Mother and Child with the guiding Star. The actual decoration itself can vary, but the subject depicted in the decorations don't. There are certain national holiday decorations that never change. The flag for Flag Day is a good example.

For fun and highlight, holiday decorations can simply be all glitter and sparkles. Or your holiday decorations can be juvenile. They can incorporate cartoon or storybook characters. They can be part of a famous fashion doll line. They can be seasonal and natural items from the great outdoors, like Christmas trees, wreaths and garlands, pumpkins, lilies or poinsettias. Your holiday decorations can be certain foods, like decorated eggs, specially shaped cookies and specific colors of candy. And even if you do not recognize, observe or celebrate certain holidays, you will usually we aware of and familiar with the customary decorations that are associated with most common holidays.

In the attempt to be politically correct and sensitive to different cultures, there is huge debate going on about the display of certain holiday decorations associated with religious holidays. Although the decoration itself may not be offensive, the fact that it is associated with a holiday that may be exclusive and can be oppressive it has become important to consider holiday decorations in certain settings as not being appropriate or permitted. But at this point, in many places in the world, individuals are free to decorate for the holidays according to their own wishes in the privacy of their own homes.
